Grey whale — size comparison — facts and sources

The grey whale inhabits the North Pacific. Pale patches, scars and attached organisms give individuals distinctive appearances. Instead of a tall dorsal fin, it has a low hump and a series of knuckles.

It feeds mainly on bottom-dwelling crustaceans and other invertebrates, taking in sediment and food before filtering through baleen. It is known for long migrations between feeding and breeding grounds; a round trip can exceed 16 thousand kilometres. It often travels close to shore, alone or in small groups.
