The grey seal is native to the Baltic and also occurs elsewhere in the North Atlantic. It has an elongated snout, particularly prominent in adult males, and grey fur with irregular spots. Males are larger and bulkier than females. It rests on islets, sandy and rocky shores and, in part of its range, ice.
It hunts mainly fish, whose composition depends on local feeding grounds; it also eats cephalopods. On land it may lie in large gatherings, but feeding takes place over a wider area. The female gives birth to one pup and nurses it briefly with very fatty milk. The pup is born with pale, fluffy fur that it later loses.
