The northern grasshopper mouse inhabits prairies, dunes and dry scrub in western North America. It often selects sandy ground for burrows and open spaces for searching for prey.
Unlike many mice it feeds mainly on animals. It hunts orthopterans, beetles, moths and other invertebrates and may also attack small rodents. It approaches prey carefully and seizes it in a rapid attack.
It usually leads a solitary life. It produces loud, high-pitched signals, unusual for such a small mammal. Relationships with other individuals may be aggressive, particularly in confined spaces.
