Grass snake — size comparison — facts and sources

The grass snake (Natrix natrix) is associated with wetlands in Central and Eastern Europe. Pale patches usually lie behind its head; these give the snake its Polish name.

This water-associated hunter captures prey without constricting it and often swallows amphibians alive. It swims and dives proficiently in search of prey. In defence it may play dead and release an unpleasant-smelling substance.

It eats chiefly amphibians, as well as fish. It lays eggs in warm, moist organic material. This profile concerns Natrix natrix, rather than the separate Natrix helvetica.
