Southern flying squirrel — size comparison — facts and sources

The southern flying squirrel has large eyes, soft grey-brown fur and a pale belly. It lives in eastern North American forests. At night it glides between trees using a membrane connecting its forelimbs and hind limbs.

It eats seeds, nuts, fungi and small animals, also seeking food on the ground and fallen wood. Summer activity may span much of the night, while winter outings can be shorter. In cold weather several individuals may share a nest, reducing heat loss.
