The Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) is a venomous lizard of dry regions in the United States and Mexico. It inhabits dry scrub, rocky slopes and valleys. Black and pinkish or orange areas create a contrasting skin pattern.
Scales appear covered in small beads, and a substantial head contains strong jaws. Much time is spent in shelter, reducing water loss and overheating. Tail fat is used during long gaps between feeding.
It eats eggs, small mammals and other small vertebrates. A female lays eggs in the ground. Venom enters a bite wound through grooves in lower-jaw teeth.
