The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The giant squid inhabits deep water near continental and island slopes. It has eight arms and two much longer feeding tentacles ending in expanded, sucker-bearing clubs. Its enormous eyes are among the largest in the animal kingdom and help detect objects in very dim light.
It catches fish and other cephalopods. The tentacles reach prey, and the arms draw it towards the hard central beak. Sperm whales prey on giant squid; sucker marks and remains found in their stomachs were important sources of knowledge about this cephalopod.
For a long time, research relied mainly on dead specimens washed ashore or caught in fisheries. Footage of living animals in deep water came much later. Anatomy is therefore better understood than the full course of their lives, reproduction and daily activity.
