The giant sable antelope (Hippotragus niger variani) is an Angolan subspecies of sable antelope. It inhabits savannas and wooded grasslands. Adult males have very dark coats and long, curved horns; females are usually lighter.
It chiefly eats grasses, using feeding grounds where open pasture adjoins tree cover. Seasonal changes in food and water availability affect use of different parts of the landscape.
It lives in herds, and males may hold areas associated with female groups. Its restricted range ties conservation to the preservation of Angolan savannas.
