The giant panda is a bear of the mountain forests of central China. It inhabits cool, damp areas with dense bamboo undergrowth. Dark limbs, shoulders, ears and eye patches contrast with its pale head and body.
Bamboo makes up almost all of its diet, although its digestive system retains features inherited from carnivorous ancestors. An enlarged wrist bone acts as a false thumb for holding stems. Strong jaws and broad teeth help break down tough bamboo, and feeding occupies much of the day.
