The giant Pacific octopus inhabits cool North Pacific waters. It has eight sucker-covered arms and a soft body that can squeeze into rocky crevices. Changes in skin colour and texture provide camouflage. Most of its life is solitary, using dens on rocky seabeds.
Prey includes crabs, clams, fish and other cephalopods. Suckers both grip and receive tactile and chemical information, allowing food to be explored with the arms. A hard beak breaks up prey, while a jet of water expelled through the funnel enables rapid escape.
The female lays thousands of eggs, cleaning and ventilating them in her den. During this period she stops feeding and dies after the young hatch. Even an octopus of this size lives only a few years, with reproduction occurring at the end of its life.
