The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The giant manta ray is a large ray with broad pectoral fins and paired lobes beside the mouth. It inhabits warm and temperate ocean waters, often near islands and productive reefs. Dark belly-spot patterns allow individual identification.
It feeds on zooplankton and other small drifting organisms. The mouth lobes help direct food-rich water into the mouth. It travels long distances and may gather with other mantas where plankton is abundant.
It matures late and reproduces slowly, so bycatch losses may have lasting effects. Returning individuals are also observed at sites where small fish remove skin parasites.
