Giant grouper — size comparison — facts and sources

The giant grouper is among the largest fishes inhabiting Indo-Pacific reefs. It has a substantial body and enormous mouth that can open suddenly to suck in prey. It uses caves, wrecks, rocky shelters and river mouths.

It hunts fish, spiny lobsters, crabs and other available animals, including smaller sharks. Adults are usually encountered alone. Slow movement or waiting beside a shelter gives way to a short, explosive attack when prey comes close enough.
