The giant eland, Taurotragus derbianus, is a large antelope of western and central Africa, inhabiting savannas, scrub and open woodland. Narrow white vertical stripes cross its tawny-brown sides. Mature males have a heavy neck, a developed dewlap and darker colouring over the front of the body.
It eats leaves, young shoots and grasses at different levels in the vegetation. Herd movements between feeding areas are linked to seasonal rainfall. Water and sheltered places matter for both resting and raising young.
It lives in herds. Both sexes have spiralled horns, usually longer and heavier in males. It is closely related to the common eland but differs in features including neck appearance and the prominence of pale stripes.
