Giant Australian cuttlefish — size comparison — facts and sources

The giant Australian cuttlefish inhabits rocky reefs and other shallow southern Australian habitats. A fin surrounds its broad mantle, and arms cluster around the mouth. Rapid skin-colour and pattern changes provide both camouflage and signals to other cuttlefish.

It hunts fish, crabs and other crustaceans. Particularly striking breeding occurs in Spencer Gulf, where thousands gather in a limited coastal area. Males display intense patterns and compete for females, which place eggs in rock crevices.
