The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The giant anteater inhabits savannas, wetlands and forests in Central and South America. It has a long tubular muzzle, powerful forelimbs and a bushy tail. A black band edged in white runs diagonally from the chest across the shoulder.
It specialises in ants and termites. Large foreclaws open their nests, and a long tongue coated in sticky saliva collects the insects. Smell helps locate prey before the nest is opened.
Giant anteaters usually live alone. Their activity can shift with temperature and human disturbance, so feeding does not always occur at the same time of day. They seek sheltered places to rest after foraging.
