The gerenuk (Litocranius walleri) is a slender antelope of dry scrub in the Horn of Africa and Kenya. It inhabits thorn savannas and semi-deserts. A long neck, narrow head and tall legs give it a distinctive outline, with a darker saddle contrasting with the pale belly and eye rings.
It can stand on its hind legs to reach leaves beyond the reach of shorter herbivores. It also eats shoots, flowers, fruit and succulents. Much of its water comes from food; where vegetation is sufficiently juicy, it can manage without drinking at waterholes.
It is active by day and behaves unobtrusively, using shrubs for cover. Males defend territories.
