Geoffroy’s cat — size comparison — facts and sources

Geoffroy's cat inhabits varied environments of southern South America, from grassy plains and scrub to wetlands. It moves mainly on the ground but climbs well. Trees, hollows, roots and tall vegetation provide resting places and cover while travelling.

It hunts mainly small mammals. Depending on habitat it also catches birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. It stalks prey and attacks by surprise. Food composition changes seasonally: waterbirds may matter more in wetlands, and rodents or hares elsewhere.

It usually lives alone, while females stay with kittens during rearing. Activity often occurs at night, although it may also feed by day. Prey availability, season and human presence affect its behavioural rhythm.
