The gemsbok inhabits deserts, semi-deserts and dry savannas. Dark bands cross its light grey coat on the face, flanks and limbs, and the tail is black.
It eats grasses, leaves, roots and tubers, also using moisture contained in plants. During the hottest part of the day, it can temporarily raise body temperature, delaying sweating and reducing water loss. It usually lives in mobile herds, although some males defend territories.
Animal Diversity Web podaje 115–125 cm w barku oraz 180–240 kg u samców. Na planszy używamy 120 cm, środka zakresu. Rogi mogą mieć ponad metr i dominują nad sylwetką, ale nie zmieniają skali barkowej.
