Theropithecus gelada
The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The gelada lives in the Ethiopian highlands and spends most of the day on the ground. Unusually among primates, grasses form the basis of its diet; its small fingers deftly select blades and seeds. The red chest patch is an important social signal, and males have an abundant mane.
Small family units join larger, complex societies. At night the animals descend to rock ledges that restrict predators’ access.
Calls, facial expressions and gestures maintain contact within the group. Relationships between families change, and individual units may gather in large feeding aggregations.
Plansza używa 70 cm do czubka głowy w pokazanej pozycji, a nie 70 cm do barku; ta wcześniejsza interpretacja prawie dwukrotnie powiększała zwierzę.
