The gaur is a huge wild bovid of South and South-East Asian forests. Adult males have dark coats, heavy necks and strongly developed forequarters. Pale lower legs resemble stockings in both sexes. A prominent shoulder ridge and curved horns are characteristic.
It uses forest cover and open clearings for feeding, eating grasses, leaves and young shoots as availability changes. Females and young live in herds, while adult males more often stay alone or in smaller groups. The wild gaur is closely related to the domestic gayal, but Bos gaurus refers to the wild population.
