The lesser grison has an elongated body, short legs and a greyish back. A white forehead band separates this from the black face and underside. It inhabits various terrestrial environments, including waterside areas.

It may hunt alone, although individuals travelling together have also been observed, including a female with young. It hunts chiefly small vertebrates. Activity is not confined to one time of day and includes daylight hours.
