The Galápagos sea lion lives chiefly in the Galápagos, with a small colony near Isla de la Plata. It rests on beaches and rocky shores. Adult males are bulkier than females with thick necks and pronounced forehead crests.
It chiefly hunts fish, including sardines and anchovies, in cool productive island waters. Males defend breeding areas and females return regularly to pups. During strong El Niño events, warmer seas reduce food availability and can greatly limit pup survival.
