Gaboon viper — size comparison — facts and sources

The Gaboon viper (Bitis gabonica) is a venomous snake of tropical African humid forests and leaf litter. It has an exceptionally broad head and heavy body, with multicoloured mosaic-like shapes on its skin. Its motionless body blends with fallen leaves, concealing head position from approaching prey.

It is more active in the evening and at night. It eats small mammals, ground-dwelling birds and amphibians.

Older accounts treated this species more broadly, including populations now separated.
