Fossa — size comparison — facts and sources

The fossa is a predator of Madagascar’s humid and dry forests. Its elongated outline may resemble a cat, but it belongs to a separate group of Malagasy carnivorans related to mongooses. It chiefly hunts lemurs while also taking other vertebrates.

Usually solitary, it moves capably both on the ground and in tree crowns. A long tail, partly retractable claws and flexible ankle joints help it negotiate branches. Ankle mobility allows it to descend trunks head first.
