Fishing cat — size comparison — facts and sources

The fishing cat is associated with wetlands of South and Southeast Asia. It occurs along rivers, in swampy scrub and other places providing water and cover. Dense bank vegetation allows rest and concealed approaches to food animals.

Fish form an important part of its diet. While hunting it may wait beside water and scoop prey with a paw or enter the water. It also uses birds, rodents, reptiles and other available prey. It often feeds at night when human activity in wetlands decreases.

In the wild it lives mainly alone. Scent marks help maintain contact with neighbours without direct encounters. The female rears young in a sheltered retreat. The family lives of wild individuals remain poorly known.
