Fire salamander — size comparison — facts and sources

The fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) is a terrestrial amphibian of Europe's damp forests, particularly those with streams. Yellow patches contrast with black skin, creating individually variable patterns.

Damp litter limits dehydration, while skin glands produce a defensive secretion. Encounters are easiest on wet nights. By day it remains beneath wood, stones or other cool shelters.

It eats earthworms, slugs, snails and other invertebrates. In many populations females give birth to larvae in water. Adults lack external gills and live chiefly on land.
