The European fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) inhabits shallow lowland European waters. It uses shallow, warm ponds and floodwaters. Its dark back helps conceal it in shallow water.
The contrasting red-orange belly pattern may be exposed defensively, signalling skin secretions to an attacker. It spends much time in water, and males call from the surface.
