The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The field vole lives where grasses provide food and cover. In British landscapes it inhabits unmown or lightly grazed meadows, heathland, woodland edges and young forestry plantations. It places a nest of shredded grass leaves beside a plant clump, underground or in another sheltered site.
Grasses form the main part of its diet. It regularly moves between feeding sites, with dense vegetation reducing exposure to predators. It does not hibernate. Seasonal moulting allows it to function under differing cold- and warm-season conditions.
Females rear several litters per season, but many young fall prey to predators. Population numbers may fluctuate cyclically. Vole abundance affects breeding opportunities for owls and kestrels. Grassy strips beside roads and hedges sustain this part of the food web.
