Vulpes zerda
The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The fennec fox spends the day in an underground shelter that protects it from heat. After dark it emerges onto sandy feeding grounds. Its enormous ears help detect sounds and release heat, while hairy feet protect the soles when moving over hot ground.
It searches for invertebrates and small vertebrates, supplementing its food with plant parts. Hearing helps locate prey hidden in sand. Water availability is limited, so moisture contained in food is also important.
Fennecs maintain family contacts, and the young develop in an underground den. The shelter protects them from extreme temperatures and predators.
