The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The false gharial is a reptile of swamp forests in Sumatra, Borneo and the Malay Peninsula. It occupies peatlands, flooded forests and slow rivers. Its long, narrow snout resembles that of the gharial, but it is a separate species with its own evolutionary history and habitat.
It hunts fish and other vertebrates in water or along the shore. Vegetation and quiet water provide cover while waiting for prey. A strong tail aids swimming among roots and submerged obstacles. Basking and resting depend on suitable sites within the forest landscape.
A female builds a nest on land and lays eggs in plant material. Hatchlings take smaller foods and need sheltered banks. Peatland drainage removes feeding areas, cover and breeding sites.
