European wildcat — size comparison — facts and sources

The European wildcat inhabits forests, clearings and scrub. It is usually more heavily built than a domestic cat and has a thick tail with distinct rings and a blunt tip.

It lives alone and hunts chiefly rodents, as well as birds and other small vertebrates. It can interbreed with domestic cats, making wild individuals harder to identify. Appearance alone does not always distinguish a hybrid; researchers also use genetic data.
