European mole — size comparison — facts and sources

The European mole spends most of its life underground. It selects soils suitable for digging and containing enough invertebrates. An extensive passage network connects resting sites with feeding areas. Molehills result from bringing excavated soil to the surface.

It feeds mainly on earthworms and other soil inhabitants. It searches by digging and patrolling existing tunnels. Broad front feet are adapted to moving soil. Touch and smell play important roles in hunting in darkness.

It usually lives alone and defends its passage system. During mating, males extend their routes in search of females. Young are reared in a sheltered nest. Activity is divided into short periods of tunnel patrol and rest.
