The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is a small European mammal found in forests, scrub, parks and gardens. Spines protect its back, while fur covers its muzzle and underside. When threatened it can curl into a ball, hiding vulnerable parts beneath the spiny covering.
It searches for food mainly at night. It explores litter, grass and damp corners using smell and hearing. It eats various invertebrates, including beetles, larvae and earthworms.
It usually lives alone. It makes leaf-and-grass nests beneath shrubs or in other retreats. In the cold part of the year it hibernates, using previously accumulated fat reserves. Around settlements, movement between gardens matters because its nightly journeys are not confined to one property.
Podczas zimnej pory roku zapada w sen zimowy, korzystając z gniazd z liści i trawy. Zarośla, obrzeża lasów, łąki i ogrody. Żywi się przede wszystkim: dżdżownice, chrząszcze, ślimaki i inne bezkręgowce. Nocny i samotny, przemierza znaczne odległości podczas żerowania. Na planszy przyjęto około 15 cm w barku jako porównawczy punkt dorosłego zwierzęcia. Wysokość 15 cm to przybliżony punkt do grzbietu, a nie miara długości ciała.
