The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The European hamster inhabits open areas of Europe and Asia. In Poland it is associated with upland fields, meadows and waste ground among other habitats. Firm soil permits extensive burrows. Underground shelters provide space for rest, rearing and food storage.
It feeds particularly at dusk. It eats grain, seeds, roots, fruit and green plant parts and occasionally insects and larvae. Cheek pouches carry food to the burrow. Stores reduce the need to remain exposed while eating.
Adults defend their areas, marking them by scent. Male–female contacts increase during breeding. The female rears offspring underground; newborns have closed eyes and require nursing. Above ground it must avoid raptors, foxes and mustelids.
