European ground squirrel — size comparison — facts and sources

The European ground squirrel inhabits short grassland, steppes and pastures in Europe. Well-drained soil allows burrow construction, while low vegetation provides a view of approaching danger.

By day it eats shoots, leaves, roots, flowers and seeds, supplemented by animal food. Much of its active season is devoted to feeding. In winter it hibernates underground.

Many burrows may lie close together, but each animal maintains its own refuge. Open habitats are essential: encroaching tall vegetation restricts visibility and changes living conditions.
