Eurasian otter — size comparison — facts and sources

The Eurasian otter uses waters connected to safe bankside resting sites. It needs both productive feeding grounds and sheltered retreats among roots or vegetation. It may live along rivers, lakes and coasts, adjusting daily routes to local conditions.

It hunts mainly fish, supplementing its diet with other available animals. A powerful tail and webbed toes aid swimming. After leaving water it grooms its dense fur. Scent traces at distinctive bankside points convey information to neighbours.

The female cares for young in shelter. Offspring spend a long time learning feeding areas with her and gradually develop swimming and hunting skills. Bankside habitat continuity matters for movement. Roads crossing waterways can impede safe use of extensive areas.
