Eurasian beaver — size comparison — facts and sources
The Eurasian beaver is a semi-aquatic rodent of rivers, lakes and wetlands. It has dense, double-layered fur, webbed hind feet and a broad, flattened tail. When diving, it closes its nostrils and ears, while a transparent membrane protects its eyes. Its lips can close behind the incisors, allowing it to gnaw branches underwater.
It eats bark, shoots, leaves and aquatic plants. A family occupies a shared territory with a lodge or bank burrow. Where water is too shallow, beavers may build dams that create pools. In winter they use a store of branches gathered below the surface.
Scent left along the banks signals their presence to neighbours. The broad tail helps steer in water, stores fat and delivers alarm slaps on the surface. The pools they create change conditions for plants and other animals around the beaver family.
