The European badger (Meles meles) is a mustelid of Europe and western Asia. It has a substantial body, short limbs and long claws adapted for digging. Two black stripes run from the nose through the eyes towards the ears, contrasting with the pale centre of the head.
Its flexible diet includes earthworms, insects, small vertebrates, fruit and cereals. Smell plays an important role in nocturnal foraging and scent marking. Activity decreases in cold months, although badgers do not undergo the deep, uninterrupted hibernation of many winter-dormant rodents.
Family groups use extensive setts with numerous entrances, chambers and paths. Successive generations may remodel and use a shelter system for decades.
