Etruscan shrew — size comparison — facts and sources

The Etruscan shrew hides in litter and thickets in warm areas, especially the Mediterranean region. It may also occur in gardens and other places with plant cover and plentiful invertebrates.

Its tiny body requires frequent feeding. While foraging it explores its surroundings with its mobile snout and whiskers; vision is less important. It eats small insects and must break up large morsels.

Between excursions it hides beneath leaves. Its secretive lifestyle makes it difficult to observe in nature, so some information about its behaviour comes from studies under controlled conditions.
