Ethiopian wolf — size comparison — facts and sources

The Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis) is a canid endemic to Ethiopia's highlands. It inhabits open grasslands and plateaus where low vegetation allows it to spot prey. A slender muzzle, long limbs and reddish hair with white markings distinguish it from the grey wolf.

It chiefly hunts rodents. During daily hunting it usually works alone, watching the ground and reacting to small animals' movements.

Despite solitary hunting, it lives in groups whose members jointly defend territory and help care for young, maintaining numerous social contacts. Its restricted range makes suitable grasslands and connections between mountain populations especially important for survival.
