Natterjack toad — size comparison — facts and sources

The natterjack toad is a European amphibian associated with open, often sandy habitats. A thin pale or yellowish line along its back is its best-known identifying mark. Its body is stocky, and its hindlimbs are relatively short compared with those of many frogs.

It occupies dunes, heathland and similar areas with available hiding places. It is active mainly at night, hunting insects and other invertebrates. It often moves with a fast walk or run rather than making long leaps.

It breeds in shallow pools where water warms quickly. Females lay spawn in strings, and tadpoles develop before leaving the water.
