Rainbow boa — size comparison — facts and sources
The rainbow boa inhabits tropical South America. Its reddish or brown body bears dark rings around patches, with longitudinal head stripes. The most distinctive effect appears under suitable lighting: the scales shimmer in many colours although the underlying pattern stays the same.
It is associated with wet forests and their edges. Activity occurs mainly at night. It moves on the ground but also uses vegetation. It eats small mammals, birds and other small vertebrates, subduing them with coils of its body.
The female gives birth to live young rather than leaving eggs in an external nest. Adults are usually one and a half to two metres long. Older sources covered a broader population group than the current species concept.
Środek zakresu 150–200 cm w starszej karcie ADW. Występowanie ograniczono do południowoamerykańskiego E. cenchria, bez obecnie odrębnego E. maurus. W obu ujęciach tułów pozostaje w pozycji bocznej, z lekkimi wygięciami. W drugim ujęciu tylko końcowy odcinek szyi i głowa są zwrócone do patrzącego. Skalę obu wersji ustalono z tej samej długości ciała i odpowiadającego sobie odcinka tułowia. Grubość tułowia i wysokość postawy są przybliżeniami rekonstrukcji, nie osobnymi pomiarami biologicznymi.
