The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The emu is Australia’s largest native bird. Flightless but equipped with long, strong legs, it travels quickly through open woodland, scrub and grassy plains. The shaggy brown plumage has two similarly developed shafts growing from each feather base. Short wings are almost concealed beneath body feathers.
Emus move in search of seasonal food, eating seeds, fruit, green plant material and insects. Rich feeding areas can attract groups that later disperse as conditions change.
The male cares for the clutch. He incubates large, dark-green eggs on the ground, hardly leaving to feed. After hatching, he leads the striped chicks, shows them feeding grounds and protects them. The female may meanwhile pair with another male.
