Electric eel — size comparison — facts and sources
The electric eel is a fish with a long, almost cylindrical body, small eyes and an elongated anal fin. Undulations of this fin allow it to swim forwards and backwards. Despite its common name, it does not belong to the true eel family.
Its electric organs produce pulses with different functions. A 2019 study divided electric eels into three species. This profile represents Electrophorus electricus, associated with the Guiana Shield, rather than all electric eels in Amazonia.
Historical accounts giving a broad range and record voltages may also include E. voltai and E. varii.
