Eld's deer (Rucervus eldii) is an Asian deer whose males have distinctively curved antlers. Its regional forms inhabit different parts of South and Southeast Asia. Its range is discontinuous, with scattered populations associated with different habitats.
It uses dry forests, open meadows, floodplains and marshes. The diet includes grasses, sedges, leaves and young shoots. Habitat differences influence available foods and daily travel routes.
One regional form lives on the floating, waterlogged meadows of India's Loktak Lake. This unusual habitat does not describe every Eld's deer population. The species is social, and males compete during breeding.
