The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Amur rat snake originates in Far Eastern Asia around the Amur basin and neighbouring regions. Adults have dark, sometimes almost black bodies with pale crossbands. Juveniles look different: their pattern is browner and less contrasting, changing as they grow.
It occupies forests and wooded areas, particularly where sheltered places and moisture are plentiful. It can climb trees and search branches. It eats rodents, birds, eggs and other small vertebrates, subduing prey with body coils.
The female lays eggs in a safe retreat, and young are independent from the outset. During the cold part of the year the snakes reduce activity and overwinter in shelter. Adults usually exceed one and a half metres, although individuals vary in size.
