The Egyptian spiny-tailed lizard (Uromastyx aegyptia) inhabits Egyptian and Arabian deserts. It uses desert and semi-desert areas with burrows. A stocky body and strong legs suit terrestrial desert life.
Rings of tail spines protect its rear, particularly when it remains at a shelter entrance. It basks by day but escapes extreme temperatures and danger in a deep burrow.
It eats leaves, flowers, fruit and seeds. The female lays eggs in the ground.
