Eastern newt — size comparison — facts and sources

The eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) is a salamander of eastern North America, inhabiting small freshwater bodies and surrounding forests. Orange juveniles differ markedly from olive aquatic adults.

Adults swim efficiently with a flattened tail and feed in water both by day and at night.

When aquatic conditions deteriorate they may emerge onto land. Food includes small invertebrates such as aquatic insect larvae. The life cycle often includes an aquatic larva, orange terrestrial juvenile and aquatic adult, with development varying according to local conditions.
