Eastern mole — size comparison — facts and sources

The eastern mole digs tunnels in forests, gardens, pastures and lawns. It needs soil in which it can dig effectively; despite its scientific name, it usually avoids heavily waterlogged ground beside water.

It eats earthworms, beetle larvae, ants and other soil invertebrates. Shallow tunnels help it find prey, while deeper, more permanent passages provide travel routes and space for a nest.

It feeds at different times of day and does not hibernate. During droughts or frosts it more often uses existing tunnels. Females rear their young in a better-sheltered part of the underground system.
