Eastern indigo snake — size comparison — facts and sources

The eastern indigo snake (Drymarchon couperi) is a large, nonvenomous snake of Florida and southern Georgia. It inhabits pine forests, wetlands and open areas. Smooth scales create a glossy, dark body surface.

It feeds by day and uses different habitats seasonally. Gopher tortoise burrows provide important winter shelters.

In warmer months it more often selects damper places. It eats mammals, amphibians, fish, eggs and other reptiles. It is not a typical constrictor, subduing prey through jaw and body strength. Competing males try to pin opponents to the ground.
